Liliya Zalevskaya is a visual artist and educator (b. 1979, Ukrainian-American). She works in printmaking, video, and installation. She earned a BFA in Printmaking from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Zalevskaya teaches Printmaking and Drawing at Gaston College in Dallas, NC. In addition to teaching, she is a Gallery Coordinator at Gaston College, overseeing programming, installations, and events. She is also a collective member of Goodyear Arts in Charlotte and has exhibited video and print-based work in the Southeast for over 15 years. She resides in Mount Holly, NC, with her partner, artist David Sackett, and their dog River Song.
Liliya's artistic practice fundamentally explores the way in which individuals construct and derive meaning. Her work delves into how people navigate the divide between their thoughts and the world around them. These creative endeavors embody her playful exploration of the roles she assumes as a creator, actor, and editor in the construction of a dimension that challenges conventional notions of reality.
The fantastical elements in her work arise from the unease stemming from the distinctions between what is considered real and what is perceived. Through her art, she seeks to understand this gap, where the ordinary assumes a strange and unfamiliar quality, which she terms as the Absurd. In this context, Absurdity becomes the driving force behind her artistic exploration, infusing the creative process with a sense of play. The artist's work primarily encompasses printmaking, video, and installation, with each medium serving as a unique vehicle for her expression.
