Common Ground, Stanley, NC, 2023, 4K video, 2:00 min
An experimental work made in response to Romare Bearden's Carolina Shout, for Mint Museum exhibition of eight artists responding to the work. When looking at Carolina Shout I am drawn to technique, formal qualities, and the depiction of a place. Bearden’s use of collage and printmaking is innovative and experimental, especially, when considering Carolina Shout with its related artworks, such as Baptism watercolor and print. The different versions capture the passing of time and corresponding changes. In my response to Carolina Shout I want to push the formal concerns of collage to the forefront while showing a fragment of the place I call home.
Common Ground Still I, 2024, Serigraph, hand coloring, 19.75”x 27.5”
This piece is a print derived from a still in the video Common Ground and is intended to be exhibited alongside the video. Together, the print and video invite viewers to reflect on the role of artistic media in shaping both the creation and interpretation of meaning within an artwork. By juxtaposing stillness and motion, the work emphasizes how the medium influences perception, asking whether meaning is inherent in the image itself or emerges through the viewer's engagement with its context. This pairing underscores the idea that art is not confined to a single form but thrives in dialogue between different media, expanding and deepening its narrative possibilities.
